A Gamin Shout Out: Dawn of War 2

Sup ladies and gentlemen.  i just found out some exciting news regarding Dawn of War 2, which if you don’t know is the sequel to one of(if not THE) greatest RTS franchises in the history of RTS games.  Let me give a little insight into the game that is Dawn of War.  Dawn of War, for those unfamiliar, is based on the table top game of Warhammer 40K.  My buddies and I use to play this all the time back in our youth.  We’d spend hours painting, playing, cheering, crying, and generally having a good time kicking the snot out of each other.  I remember towards the tale end of our days playing we’d talk about how awesome it would be if there was a Warhammer 40K version of Warcraft 2(that was the latest one out at the time).  We’d go all geeky about what kinds of troops, weapons, buildings, etc we could field into battle.  My imagination soared as I played the game in my head.  Alas for quite some time that was the only place I’d be able to “play” it.  Then jump almost 12 years later, and Relic finally granted my teenage dream, Dawn of War the RTS.

It was love at first geek.  The detail, the ability to “paint” your troops however you wanted, the total viceral carnage that spewed forth from this game gave me a gaming hard on for years to come.  I went on to purchase every expansion: Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and SoulStorm each one offering something new to the table, but each one always leaving one important element out….Tyranids.  This race kept losing out on it’s chance to show itself in the Dawn of War franchise.  As each expansion appeared I hold my breath waiting to see whether or not this Alien-like race would finally make it’s presence known.  Nope.  It just wasn’t meant to be.  In fact the developers themselves continued to stress the engine for Dawn of War would not do the Tyranids justice so they continued to leave them out…….until now!  That’s right ladies and gents.  Dawn of War 2 has delivered on it’s word.  The Tyranids are here, and boy what an entrance they make!

Here’s an interesting interview that showcases a lot of the game’s features, and what we should be expecting come Spring 09′.  I know I’m excited, and hopefully all this info got you all pumped up as well.  The game itself will be running on a modified Company of Heroes engine(which in and of itself already sold me).  I should mention that Starcraft 2 is also on the horizon, and is a very highly anticipated title, but for me I’m saving my money for Dawn of War 2, but to each his or her own.  There you have it ladies and gents.  I hope you enjoyed another edition of A Gamin Shout Out.  Thanks for reading.

I both love and hate that this one is coming out.
Love- Holy shit have you seen some of this stuff! Lighting, detail, Company of Hero’s smart squad movment. Yeah. Geekgasm right here.
Hate- I just got my head around the idea of dropping computer gaming and my pocketbook was already happier for it. Now i’m gonna have to build a new system. There goes a grand and a couple weekends of my life.

Oh and screw startcraft! It looks like shit in comparison. They still use the GI Joe kung fu grip action style of character attack animation. One robotic looking slice repeated over and over and over. It looks lame if you have ever seen good rts animations (thank you relic)
