The Death of Everything Real… in a way.
One of my personal hero’s died last night. Stan Winston was the creator of nearly every special effect that i admired growing up. Terminator, Aliens, Predator, Jurassic Park, and Ironman were all aided by his, and his team’s handiwork. With the advent of CG, his skills were featured less and less, and i still think that is a shame. I don’t know if i can truely call him one of the pioneers of puppetry, but he did bring it up to a level where i considered it a work of art every time. The studio he created lives on and will produce the effects for the new series of Terminator movies, and i hope it lives on for a very long time.
Stan Winston passed at his home in Los Angeles last night after an ongoing battle with cancer, at age 62.
If you havn’t already,… Moment of silence people……..
Shit man that sucks… he seemed like a really nice guy too.
Didn’t hear anything about this. That sucks, he did good work.
I didn’t know about it until I read your post! I was in such shock that I had to read the beginning of the second sentence 3 times before it sunk in.
Certainly his studio will live on, but he will be sorely missed, by both movie-makers and moviegoers.
Truly a tragic loss for the movie industry. Were it not for his brilliance, many of the sci-fi/action films of my youth would have looked so different.
What is most sad, is that I would never have known if it weren’t for your post. The news media seems to only care about that Tim Russert guy. While his death was tragic and sudden, and he may have been a passionate political analyst, Stan Winston touched the world in a far more profound way through his movie magic. Yet the media has seemed to forget him.
But, his fans never will. May he rest in peace.
